Read the brief before you send your work in. All open calls are listed below.
To get a feel for the kind of work we publish and why, read the About page first.
We read everything we receive: fully, or until we know the work is not for us. If it isn't, we'll tell you why. If it is, we'll be in touch. Either way, expect to hear from us within twelve weeks.
One submission at a time, please. Simultaneous submissions are fine; let us know immediately if the work is accepted elsewhere.
What we look for

- Performed emotion
- Explained metaphors
- Correct politics in bad prose
- Narrators asking for sympathy
- Obvious redemptive arcs

- The strange, handled without ceremony
- Politics embedded in what the narrator notices
- Writing that works on the sentence level
- Questions rather than answers
AI-assisted work
Seize the means of production.
We see AI as a tool, not a malevolent sentient entity, and accept AI-assisted work. We are not interested in policing your process. Whether it includes a writing group, a regime of controlled intoxication, or a chatbot, use whatever makes your writing better.
Just bear in mind that, more often than not, AI assistance makes people's writing sound exactly like everyone else's: the same clipped, metronomic sentences that sound vaguely dramatic but mean nothing ("some wounds are doors, and some doors are wounds"). That isn't better, and we will notice and roll our eyes.
Our conditions are simple
- You must hold the rights to publish
- You must disclose AI assistance when submitting
- The work must meet our literary standards. Sounding suspiciously like five other submissions we received on the same day will not
